 Blame Sally
 April 4, 2008
A female foursome from San Francisco is shaking up the folk-pop scene like an earthquake. When four former rock-star wannabes who retired their ambitions but not their talents got together to make music, a funny thing happened: success! Their combination of edgy lyrics, outstanding vocals, and accomplished instrumentation has hooked a growing and diverse fan base.

"Individually, Renee Harcourt, Monica Pasqual, Jeri Jones and Pam Delgado have long displayed stirring singer-songwriter gifts. Together they're a powerhouse unit, presenting outstanding lead vocals and harmonies." — Palo Alto Daily News

"Comparisons to the Dixie Chicks are inevitable, but not completely accurate. Musically, Blame Sally is more Indigo Girls than country pop. But, like the Dixie Chicks, they have the courage to speak, or rather sing, their minds." — Marin Independent Journal

Jeff Black with Brian Ashley Jones
 March 14, 2008
Jeff Black is a burly, bare-knuckled, blue-collar son of the Missouri plains, with dark Irish blood. As a songwriter, he digs into tough topics with a gentle heart. Yet there’s nothing predictable about a Jeff Black lyric other than it will be sung robustly, and it will head toward hope instead of dwell on despair. His live shows are funny, moving and equally unpredictable. As one reviewer has written, "What makes a Jeff Black record or show exciting is that, as a listener, you know the singer is there not to perform for you, but to take you on a journey with him."

"Black wraps his vocals around the lyrics of (his) songs, bringing a warm resonance that shows he’s lived with them." – Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. – All Music Guide

 Greg Trooper
 February 22, 2008
Rarely has there been a more aptly named performing songwriter than Greg Trooper.
Over three decades, Trooper has soldiered on through the victories and setbacks unique to a career dedicated to music, and proven that he's one of the best. He has left his own indelible mark on roots music in all the places he has called home, including Austin, New York, and Nashville.

"Greg Trooper has for years been regarded as one of the most accomplished songwriters in Nashville." —Mary Houlihan, Chicago Sun-Times

"Greg trooper is an amazing writer and recording artist, but he is even better live. It takes real guts to step up to a mic with just an acoustic guitar, but Greg does it with deep wells of confidence and talent. When he steps under the lights he owns the stage." -- Jeff Powell, Program Director, WGWG in North Carolina

 Craig Carothers
 January 25, 2008
Early in his career, Craig Carothers performed primarily in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, or as an opening act for a wide range of stellar acts.

Then in 1995, country star Trisha Yearwood’s recording of his song "Little Hercules" earned him a gold record and led to his eventual relocation to Nashville.

Carothers has more than 20 years of solid solo performances under his belt, including opening for Patty Larkin’s latest Six String Concerts appearance.

His performance was so strong, we knew we had to have him back for his own show.

Don’t miss this chance to see why Larkin said, "He has a voice that should be famous."

 Darryl Purpose with Trina Hamlin
 December 7, 2007
Meet Darryl Purpose – professional gambler, peace activist and folk singer. In 1996 this Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter gave up his career as a world-class blackjack player to write, record and perform his own songs.

With his rich baritone voice, narrative songwriting style and smooth, finger-picking guitar playing, Purpose has become known as a "dramatist for the dispossessed" – the embodiment of the modern American troubadour.

"Darryl Purpose’s guitar playing is dazzling and intricate, yet organic to the songs, creating moods and accenting the lyrics." – Music Matters

Official Website: www.darrylpurpose.com
Trina Hamlin shamelessly delivers a blues-infused folk rock fix to her eager fans. She sings the blues with breathless urgency and a driving beat and plays a mean, uninhibited blues harp. A favorite on the festival circuit and in the New York City club scene, Hamlin’s riding a rising star.

“Trina Hamlin is known for her sizzling blues harmonica and her energy-packed singing and guitar work.” — NYC.COM

This work presents a new energy and focus for Eberhardt, after a hiatus necessitated in part by a near-disastrous car accident. In his words: "After my accident, I realized it’s not about where you are going but where you are that matters." Be there with us to welcome Cliff back to the Six String stage.

Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines with Colin Gilmore
 September 7, 2007
In the 10 years since her self-released debut CD, Terri Hendrix has bloomed from the Texas hill country’s best-kept secret into one of the folk world’s most endearing and original voices. She’s also one of its most proudly independent, as shown by the song lyric she’s adopted as the slogan for her label, Wilory Records: "Own Your Own Universe." By doing just that over the course of six studio CDs and three live discs, Terri has been able to achieve artistic freedom and cultivate a thriving grassroots following.

"Terri is a truly captivating artist who will break your heart with one song and leave her sold-out crowds smiling with the next. Her songs come straight from the heart. The truest of Texas troubadours, she’s simply one of the best — and I’ve seen ‘em all." Griff Luneburg – Cactus Café, Austin, Texas

www.TerriHendrix.com
Long before the Dixie Chicks were hatched, Lloyd Maines, father of "Chick" Natalie Maines, had established himself as a country music giant, both as a legendary steel guitarist and a producer. His first tracks on Joe Ely's 1977 self-titled album established him as one of the elite musicians of Texas. Since then, he's appeared with some of the best artists in the business, including Guy Clark, Radney Foster, the Dixie Chicks … even David Byrne and Wilco.

"This guy is everywhere. Yes, indeed. Maines’ resume – and reputation – are getting mighty big. They’re making him a highly sought-after man." -- The Austin Chronicle
Colin Gilmore is more than a musical legacy. The son of renowned songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Colin has found his own voice from the wealth of musical influences of a youth surrounded by some of the best names in Texas music.

The younger Gilmore’s intelligent songwriting and knack for crafting infectious melodies promises to make his introduction to the Six String Concerts audience a memorable one.

 John Flynn with Joe Jencks
 Friday, May 11, 2007
Songwriter and activist John Flynn calls himself a "hopeful pessimist". The pessimism comes from a heartbreaking, clear-eyed honesty in assessing the condition of the world we live in. The hope comes from a deep-rooted faith in the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. In an artist of Flynn’s caliber, the tension inherent in these seemingly contradictory points of view yields the kind of songs that moved Kris Kristofferson to compare Flynn to the best writers he knows.

Flynn was so well received by the Six String Concerts audience when he opened for Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion in 2004, that we jumped at the chance to have him return as a headliner.

"John Flynn is the John Lennon of the plasma generation!" -- Ramblin’ Jack Elliott
"Flynn might well be one of the greatest hidden treasures the American axis has to discover and offer." -- Chris Spector of Midwest Record Recap

Joe has earned wide recognition for his songs about working people, and for his unique merging of musical beauty, social consciousness, and spiritual exploration. His song, Auto Mechanically Declined is used from time to time on the legendary National Public Radio show: Car Talk!

"The key to the future is people joining in. The music of Joe Jencks captures this essential spirit. Joe is a fantastic singer who carries on the traditions." -Pete Seeger

Corinne West with Doug & Telisha Williams
 Friday, April 13, 2007
With her own style of "mountain music" Corinne West delivers like a breath of fresh, cool air. Her strong and sincere delivery of intelligent and passionate songs will keep you spellbound. She spins tales with a part velvet and part grit voice that is both achingly penetrating and highly addictive.
"A Siren of the Sierras"
~ Richard Freedman, Times-Herald

Doug and Telisha Williams’ roots are real. They hail from the Blueridge Mountains of Virginia, and the music they call "Fuel Injected Folk" shows their Southern heritage and energy. A husband-and-wife team, they’ve played music together since they met in their high school marching band. When Telisha’s high, clear voice takes the lead, Doug supports with strong guitar and harmonies."...(their) music is as honest and heartfelt as they are. Their integrity and commitment to their craft shines through on this album, which I was very happy to be a part of." -Eamon McLoughlin of The Greencards

 Lucy Kaplansky with Greg Klyma
 Friday, March 23, 2007
Folksinger, turned psychologist, turned folksinger again, Lucy Kaplansky is an artist in demand. Convinced that her calling was in another direction, she left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Psychology. Fortunately for us all, she continued to sing and eventually returned to the recording studio. From there, there was no looking back. Says the Associated Press "She is clearly among the largest talents on the acoustic scene today."

"A truly gifted performer . . . strong flat-picking and a bag full of enchanting songs." The New Yorker

www.lucykaplansky.com
In 2004, Greg Klyma moved from his native Buffalo to Austin and immediately began turning heads. The Austin Chronicle called him a “witty, down-home troubadour”, and he was a finalist in the 2005 New Folk Competition at Kerrville Folk Festival. His songs present a strong social conscience, over top of country, bluegrass and rock instrumentation. But he’s not afraid to let his sense of humor come across in his songs and stories. *Jeffrey Foucault was scheduled to perform, but had to cancel. Greg Klyma is a worthy addition to this show.

"He spins meandering tales on a long loved acoustic that bring us to that point where we realize the glass is half empty and half full at the same time." - Performing Songwriter Magazine, June 2004

 Friday, March 2, 2007
The Roches are Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy, three sisters from New York City. Known for their swirling harmonies and extraordinary lyrical perspective as well as their smart and fun live performances, they have created a unique musical expression perhaps best described as “Roche Music.” Whether they are singing Handel a cappella or a song of their own creation, they blend their voices together into a single instrument of awesome harmonic beauty. "Contemporary court jesters, The Roches make you think, but not at the expense of a hearty belly laugh." - San Francisco Chronicle

 Mary Gauthier with Jim Gill
 Friday, February 9, 2007
Mary Gauthier has distilled the bitter aftertaste of the booze and drugs and bad relationships that long ruled her life into one lovely narrative after another, chronicling a merciless world in which it's always a little bit too late to change your mind. Following in the footsteps of John Prine, Gauthier exhibits a poet's unflinching eye, a counselor's compassionate heart and a trickster's wry spirit.

"Gauthier's half-spoken, half-sung vocals and powerful storytelling remain the center of the work, snugly nested in deceptively simple country-folk melodies that insulate themselves into your mind after a single listen" - Harp

www.marygauthier.com
Jim Gill’s songs evoke the emotional scenery reminiscent of Ellis Paul and Richard Shindell. His live shows are punctuated with outlandish stories culled from his life as the only son in an Irish Catholic family of 10.

"Jim Gill writes with more depth than your average poet and has a quiet intensity much like Greg Brown and John Gorka." –Jeff Niesel, Cleveland Free Times Music Review

Grimm¹s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life - rich with descriptive details, and sung with warmth and intimacy - recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America.

 Carrie Newcomer & Mustard¹s Retreat
 February 15, 2005
Newcomer has been telling stories and blending diverse musical styles for nearly two decades, influenced by "singing poets" as well as by the R&B and rock 'n' roll she heard growing up within the range of Chicago's radio waves. Her newest album, "Betty's Diner: The Best of Carrie Newcomer", is a collection of 15 songs from her previous releases as well as three new songs.

"Carrie is a very open-faced character about her beliefs, her process, and her concerns. She's got a lighthearted manner for her line of work, and seems refreshingly less self-absorbed than many in her position. Although her songs are frequently third person, they say an awful lot about her." Frank Goodman, Puremusic www.carrienewcomer.com
David Tamulevich and Michael Hough met as short orders cooks in Ann Arbor in 1974 and decided to give the folk music scene a go. Nearly thirty years later, Mustard's Retreat is still going strong.  December 10, 2004
Annie, Jeannie, and Marie possess and play one of the most hallowed instruments anyone can master - the human voice. From joyous harmonies to mournful laments, the Burns Sisters explore the widest spectrum of human emotions, weaving powerful and nuanced voices in every tune.

"Beautiful harmonies, emotional lyrics, joyous, uplifting, catchy tunes and a sweet, spunky sound that is part folk, part rock, part country and all heart." The Folk Times, Capital Region, NY

"...music with spunk and spirit." USA Today www.burnssisters.com
When you see him perform, his song introductions are as spellbinding as his colorful lyrics, brought to life by his well-traveled, conversational voice. His groove-oriented strumming and fingerpicking draw on influences from the mountains of Western North Carolina where he now lives.

"One of the finest singer-songwriters in America. There are a lot of good ones, but when it comes to the really great ones, it boils down to a select few - he's one of them." Larry Gross, Mountain Stage (National Public Radio) www.chuckbrodsky.com
Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion with John Flynn

Combining Johnny¹s love of rock and blues with Sarah Lee's roots of folk and country, they have developed an original sound that blends entertaining stories with echoes of time-honored songs of the past.

"Johnny plays mean acoustic and steel guitars and sings like a soulful bird, perfectly matching Sarah Lee Guthrie's sweet and winsome, but sometimes steel-edged voice. This folk duo performs a fascinating, nostalgic and entertaining mix of their own songs and those of others." Post and Courier, Charleston, SC www.sarahleeandjohnny.com

Karen Savoca & Pete Heitzman with Jonathan Byrd
 October 22, 2004
Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman met on stage and have been playing music together ever since. Their style is an elusive blend of all the music they love - weaving pop, soul, jazz, blues, and everything in between into their modern folk amalgam.

"Savoca blurs the lines between styles, bringing soul and funk accents to the pop/folk confessional song." Richard Meyer, Fast Folk Magazine, NYC

"An addictive blend of hybrid pop with lots of jazz whimsy and slippery funk." Dirty Linen Magazine   www.karensavoca.com
"The old world was not really different from today's world," Jonthan says. "Discovering the language and stories of that older world has shown me the essence of the human experience."

 Iris DeMent -
 September 24, 2004
Iris DeMent has been compared to many artists including Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams, Nanci Griffith, Woody Guthrie, and Patsy Cline. But Iris has a style so unique that no one quite matches her insight, intrigue, and impeccable candor.

"Artists like Iris DeMent aren't supposed to exist anymore in this cynical world. Singing unironically about family, forgiveness, and other real-life mysteries... And her singing--highlighting a sweet Ozark twang--is that rarest of gifts: a wise, friendly voice that can break your heart even as it's making it swell with a reason to love again." --David Cantwell, amazon.com   www.IrisDeMent.com

Consider some of the folks who have recorded his tunes: Vince Gill, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg. There's nothing that even resembles a dude..." www.gregtrooper.com

"If Williams’ guitar picking gets any sharper, we’ll have to create new adjectives." The Boston Globe Brooks Williams has been hailed as a "fret monster" who sings like the “Angel of Soul.” His warm voice, dazzling guitar work and energetic performances have made him an audience favorite; he’s certainly one of ours!  Kate Campbell -
 September 26, 2003
"Kate Campbell is fast making herself known as one of the more innovative and fresh writers around today." Billboard Her gift for storytelling has been compared to that of fellow Southerners Eudora Welty and William Faulkner; the quality and honesty of her music brings to mind that of Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. Make no mistake, however: Kate Campbell’s vision is singular. Her music reflects her own experiences in the South and her commitment to truthful self-examination. Raised on soul, R&B, Southern Rock, country and folk, she is a master of many styles. www.katecampbell.com
